“We have to pay our players well in order to compete with some European teams” – Patrice Motsepe

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has sparked a debate on the future of domestic football in Africa.

In a visit to Angola Dr Motsepe outlined key strategies to make local leagues more competitive and enticing for clubs, players and fans alike.

The billionaire also made some revelations on why players could earn more salaries in Africa than some European countries and would be better off staying in Africa.

“We have to show the players that We (African Clubs) can pay them to compete with the European clubs.
There are some clubs that pays big money in the big Leagues and Clubs, which is great because we want them to get the money. But for some Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Sweden etc we used to know their highest paid players salary and that is where we should start from” President Motsepe said.

Mr Motsepe was accompanied by FIFA President Gianni Infantino during their visit to Five African countries.

The two Leaders met with President João Lourenço of Angola, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau and President Carlos Vila Nova of São Tomé and Príncipe to discuss football development in Africa.
