“Why Only Football?” — Kurt Okraku Responds to Calls for Black Stars Budget Disclosure

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has reacted to increasing public demands for the release of the Black Stars budget, stating that he has no reservations about transparency but believes football is being unfairly targeted.

The discussion has intensified largely because the Black Stars receive financial support from the government. Since assuming office, Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has consistently made the team’s budget public ahead of international engagements—a move that has reportedly raised concerns within some quarters of the football fraternity.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase Radio, Okraku stressed that he is not opposed to public disclosure of the team’s finances but questioned why similar demands are not being extended to other sectors that also benefit from state funding.

🗣️ “I have no problem with the Black Stars budget being made public. But why is football the only sector being asked to do this? Why are we not demanding the same level of transparency from every institution that receives public funds?” he asked.

Okraku further explained that while accountability is essential, discussions around transparency should be broad-based rather than focused solely on football. He also emphasized that the GFA operates as a private entity, even though it collaborates closely with the state in managing national teams.
Calls for clarity on Black Stars expenditure have often resurfaced during major international tournaments, with sections of the public seeking to understand how funds are allocated and utilised.

However, the GFA president insists the association functions within established financial and administrative frameworks while continuing to support national team operations and long-term development programmes.
