American outlet The Athletic has ranked Ghana national football team 26th in its assessment of the expanded 48-team field for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, identifying the Black Stars as a dangerous wildcard despite recent instability.
The report highlights the squad’s individual quality, singling out Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo as key figures capable of making a difference on the global stage.
According to the publication, “any team that contains Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo should be worth the admission fee alone,” underlining the attacking threat Ghana can pose when at their best.
However, the ranking also reflects ongoing concerns around the team’s recent form. Ghana currently sits 74th in the FIFA World Rankings, following a disappointing run that included failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations and inconsistent performances in recent friendlies.
The situation has been further complicated by the dismissal of Otto Addo, leaving a leadership gap at a crucial stage of preparations.
Ghana face a daunting challenge in Group L, where they will come up against England, Croatia, and Panama.
Despite these obstacles, The Athletic believes Ghana have the potential to surprise, noting that with the right momentum and direction, the Black Stars could still make a deep run in the tournament.
