Ghana Target Fifth Friendly as Queiroz Steps Up World Cup Preparations

The Ghana national football team are set to play an additional international friendly as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following qualification for the tournament in North America, the Ghana Football Association had initially lined up four preparatory matches under former head coach Otto Addo. However, plans have been adjusted after his departure in the wake of defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.

Newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz is now expected to oversee an expanded schedule, with the FA working to secure a fifth friendly to give the technical team more time to implement tactical ideas.

Ghana already have confirmed warm-up matches against Mexico national football team and Wales national football team in May and June respectively, but officials believe an extra fixture will better prepare the squad for the tournament.

Queiroz, who has managed countries including Portugal, Iran and Egypt, is due to arrive in Ghana for his official unveiling alongside his technical staff. He is expected to begin immediate work on squad assessment and tactical organisation ahead of the friendlies.

The Black Stars will make their fifth World Cup appearance in Group L, where they face Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.

With time limited before the tournament kicks off, the additional friendly is seen as a crucial step in helping Queiroz stabilise the team and fine-tune preparations for the global stage.
