New Ghana national football team head coach Carlos Queiroz is set to arrive in Ghana with five members of his technical staff, as preparations ramp up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced Portuguese tactician takes over following the departure of Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties after back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.
Queiroz’s appointment is already triggering major changes within the technical structure. Sources indicate that Winfried Schäfer has been relieved of his role as technical advisor and director of football at the Ghana Football Association, while former Black Stars defender John Paintsil has also been dismissed from his role as high-performance coach.
Further adjustments are expected, with more members of the existing backroom staff likely to make way for Queiroz’s preferred team as he reshapes the setup to suit his philosophy.
The 73-year-old is due in the country this week for his official unveiling, after which he will be formally introduced to Sports Minister Kofi Adams as part of standard protocol.
Attention will then shift quickly to the pitch, with upcoming international friendlies against Mexico national football team and Wales national football team forming a key part of Ghana’s final preparations.
Drawn in Group L, Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama national football team on June 17, before facing England national football team and Croatia national football team.
With a wealth of international experience, including spells with Portugal and Iran, Queiroz is expected to bring discipline, organisation and stability to a side aiming to make a stronger impact on the global stage.
