Ghana kept their hopes of qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup alive after producing an impressive comeback victory over South Africa at the ongoing U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Black Starlets secured a crucial 3-1 triumph on Wednesday night to book a place in the playoff round after a difficult start to the tournament.
Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum’s side had opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Algeria before suffering a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Senegal, leaving them under pressure heading into the decisive encounter with South Africa.
Knowing only victory would keep their qualification hopes alive, the Black Starlets responded with a spirited display to finish third in Group D with four points behind Senegal and Algeria.
Captain Joseph Narbi played a leading role in the victory after scoring twice from the penalty spot in the first half to put Ghana in control of the contest.
Substitute Augustine Appiah later sealed the win with a late goal to complete an important night for the former African champions.
Narbi’s outstanding performance also earned him the Most Valuable Player award after inspiring Ghana to a vital victory.
The Black Starlets will now shift attention to the playoff round as they continue their pursuit of a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.
