Mamelodi Sundowns crowned African champions after dramatic CAF final triumph

Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned CAF Champions League winners after edging AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in a tense final showdown.

The South African giants secured the title after battling to a 1-1 draw in the second leg in Rabat, having carried a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first meeting in Pretoria.

AS FAR reignited the contest just before halftime when Mohamed Hrimat converted from the penalty spot after Divine Lunga was penalised inside the area.

The Moroccan side looked full of confidence after levelling the tie on aggregate, but Sundowns responded immediately in dramatic fashion.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Teboho Mokoena produced a sensational strike from distance, smashing a powerful half-volley off the underside of the crossbar to restore Sundowns’ aggregate advantage.

The goal shifted momentum back in favour of the visitors and left AS FAR needing two more goals to complete the comeback.

The hosts were handed another opportunity in the second half after VAR awarded a second penalty in the 77th minute, but Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams delivered a decisive moment by saving Hrimat’s effort to preserve his side’s lead.

AS FAR pushed desperately for another breakthrough in the closing stages, but Sundowns defended bravely through a tense finish to secure continental glory.

The triumph marks Sundowns’ second CAF Champions League title and their first since lifting the trophy in 2016.

In addition to the continental crown, the South African champions have also secured qualification for the FIFA Club World Cup and a significant financial reward following their historic success.
