Henry Asante Twum explains Baba Rahman’s Black Stars return ahead of World Cup

Ghana Football Association Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has revealed that Baba Rahman’s return to the Black Stars was a technical decision led by head coach Carlos Queiroz ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The PAOK FC defender has earned a recall to Ghana’s provisional 28-man squad for the Mundial, marking his first appearance in the national team setup since September 2023.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Asante Twum disclosed that previous attempts by former Black Stars coaches Chris Hughton and Otto Addo to bring the experienced left-back back into the squad did not materialise.

According to him, Queiroz has now succeeded in convincing the former Chelsea player to return to the national team fold as Ghana intensify preparations for the World Cup in North America.

“Baba Rahman’s return is a purely technical decision. Previous efforts by Chris Hughton and Otto Addo were unsuccessful, but Carlos Queiroz has now made it happen,” he said.

Asante Twum also clarified that the current 28-man squad represents the core of Ghana’s World Cup team, although two players will still be dropped before the final tournament list is confirmed.

“The 28 players called up for the Black Stars are the final squad for the World Cup. Twenty-six of them will make the cut based on the assessment of head coach Carlos Queiroz,” he added.

The Black Stars are currently in Cardiff preparing for an international friendly against Wales on June 2 as part of their final build-up to the tournament.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final run in 2010.
