Ghanaian teenage defender Gariba has taken another significant step in his football journey after reporting for Barcelona’s first-team pre-season ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The 19-year-old joined Hansi Flick’s squad at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper training complex, where he completed routine medical tests before participating in the club’s opening pre-season activities alongside several senior stars and highly-rated academy prospects.
The call-up is a reward for an outstanding campaign with Barcelona’s Under-19 side, where Gariba emerged as one of the club’s brightest young defenders. His assured performances in the UEFA Youth League, coupled with his strength in the air, composure in possession and defensive awareness, earned him widespread recognition within the Catalan club.
Now training with the reigning La Liga champions, the Ghanaian centre-back has a golden opportunity to prove he belongs among Barcelona’s senior ranks as Flick assesses his squad ahead of the new season.
Gariba shared the training pitch with experienced first-team players including Marc-André ter Stegen, Wojciech Szczęsny, Alejandro Balde, Andreas Christensen, Fermín López, Marc Casadó, Gerard Martín, Marc Bernal, Héctor Fort and Roony Bardghji, while several Barça Atlètic and academy players were also included in the opening sessions.
The youngster faces stiff competition for a place in Barcelona’s defence, but his rapid rise over the past year has placed him firmly in the club’s long-term plans.
His progress is also attracting attention back home in Ghana, where he is regarded as one of the country’s most promising young defenders and a player capable of becoming a future mainstay for the Black Stars.
With pre-season now in full swing, Gariba will be hoping to seize his chance and turn months of impressive academy performances into a breakthrough with one of the biggest clubs in world football.
