African champions Al Ahly will take on Spanish giants FC Barcelona in the 61st edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy after the Egyptian club confirmed an agreement between the two sides for the high-profile friendly on August 19.
The Egyptian club announced that the agreement was reached following a visit to Spain by an Al Ahly Football Company delegation, with discussions successfully concluding arrangements for the traditional pre-season fixture at Barcelona’s home ground.
“Al Ahly Football Company has reached an agreement with FC Barcelona to stage a football match between the two clubs on 19 August, as part of the 61st edition of ‘La Festa del Gamper Estrella Damm’,” the club said in an official statement.
According to Al Ahly, the delegation held meetings with senior Barcelona officials and representatives of Rio Sports, with both parties completing discussions in what the club described as a friendly atmosphere that reflected the strong relationship between the institutions.
“The discussions covered all arrangements related to the match in a friendly atmosphere that reflected the strong ties between the two clubs,” Al Ahly added.
The fixture represents another significant milestone in Al Ahly’s growing international profile as the club continues to strengthen relationships with some of Europe’s biggest football institutions.
“This collaboration marks another step in Al Ahly Football Company’s efforts to expand the club’s international presence and build strategic partnerships with major European clubs and sporting institutions,” the statement concluded.
