Somalia have formally approached Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA) seeking permission to use the Accra Sports Stadium as their home venue for matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The request comes shortly after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved the Accra Sports Stadium to host international fixtures following renovation works at the facility.
Somalia are drawn in Group C alongside Ghana, Ivory Coast and Gabon, meaning the request could see the Accra Sports Stadium host more than one fixture involving teams from the group during the qualifying campaign.
With Somalia currently seeking an approved venue for their home matches, the Accra Sports Stadium could provide the necessary setting for the Somali national team to fulfil their hosting obligations.
The development could also make Accra an important venue in Ghana’s qualifying group, particularly if Somalia’s request receives the necessary approval from the Ghanaian authorities and CAF.
For Ghana, the return of the Accra Sports Stadium to the list of approved international venues comes as a major boost ahead of the Black Stars’ 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars are expected to host their Group C opponents at the venue during the qualifiers, while the possibility of Somalia also using the stadium could give Ghanaian football fans the opportunity to watch additional international fixtures in Accra.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from 19 June to 17 July 2027, with the top two teams from each qualifying group securing qualification for the tournament.
