Kofi Adams: Black Stars Must Target Round of 32 at 2026 FIFA World Cup

Kofi Adams says the Black Stars are targeting a strong run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and are determined to progress beyond the group stage of the competition.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation explained that Ghana’s ambitions at the tournament go far beyond simply qualifying, insisting the national team must compete strongly against some of the best countries in world football.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia for the tournament, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Speaking in an interview with SoccerChat, Adams said the appointment of Carlos Queiroz demonstrates Ghana’s desire to make a serious impact at the World Cup.

“We have already qualified for the World Cup, so qualification is not why we are bringing in a new coach. We are hiring the coach because we want to go very far,” he said.

The Sports Minister also stressed that Ghana should always aim to advance beyond the first round whenever the country qualifies for the World Cup.

“For a World Cup, Ghana should not be aiming for anything below the next stage after the group phase. In this particular tournament, that means reaching the round of 32,” he added.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before facing England at Boston Stadium on June 23.
