Ghana Names Salis, Afena Gyan Among Returnees for Unity Cup Showdown

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has named his squad for the upcoming Unity Cup in London, with several familiar faces making a long-awaited return to the Black Stars setup.

Midfield dynamo Abdul Samed Salis of Sunderland headlines the list of returnees alongside striker Felix Afena Gyan, Majeed Ashimeru of Belgian giants Anderlecht, Asante Kotoko’s Kwame Opoku, and Swiss-based defender Stephan Ambrosius.

Afena Gyan, who has been out of the national team picture for nearly two years, is back in contention and expected to provide attacking firepower. Salis also makes his return following a lengthy injury spell that saw him miss much of the season.

Kwame Opoku, currently enjoying a resurgence with Asante Kotoko after a stint with USM Alger, is set for his first national team appearance in four years. The forward last featured for Ghana in a 2021 World Cup qualifier against South Africa in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, Stephan Ambrosius of FC St. Gallen returns to the fold after making his international debut against Liberia in September 2023.

Ghana will square off against West African rivals Nigeria at the GTech Community Stadium in West London on Wednesday, May 28. The winner of that clash will advance to the final of the Unity Cup, where they will face either Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago.

The tournament offers a crucial opportunity for Otto Addo to assess his squad depth ahead of future competitive engagements and to reintegrate returning talents into the team.
