“Play Your Game” – Michael Essien Urges Kamaldeen Sulemana to Express Himself Ahead of World Cup

Former Ghana international Michael Essien has thrown his support behind Kamaldeen Sulemana, urging the winger to play with confidence and freedom ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Sulemana has endured a challenging season with Atalanta BC, registering just two goals and one assist in 23 Serie A appearances. Despite the modest numbers, Essien insists the 24-year-old’s quality remains unquestionable.

Drawing from his own experience on football’s biggest stage, the former Chelsea FC midfielder emphasized the importance of self-belief in high-pressure tournaments.

“Sulemana is a great talent. I managed to see him here and he’s got a lot of qualities in him,” Essien said.

“He’s a good dribbler, he’s very fast, he’s quite strong. Hopefully he can bring that on board. He has to feel free and be himself when he’s on the pitch, then the rest will come.”

Essien’s comments come at a key moment as Ghana steps up preparations for the Mundial. Sulemana was part of the Black Stars squad during the March international window, featuring in friendlies against Austria and Germany as the team continues to fine-tune its approach.

With the World Cup fast approaching, expectations remain high for Sulemana to rediscover his best form and play a key role in Ghana’s attacking setup.
