Ibrahim Tanko has pointed to the condition of the Golden City Park pitch as one of the factors behind Medeama SC’s 2-1 defeat to Berekum Chelsea FC in the Ghana Premier League on Wednesday.
The league leaders travelled to Berekum hoping to strengthen their grip at the top of the table, but struggled to impose themselves throughout the contest before suffering a costly defeat.
Speaking after the match, Tanko admitted his side made unusual mistakes but stressed that the playing surface also affected their performance.
“I think we made a lot of unusual mistakes. Looking at the nature of the pitch, definitely the pitch did not help us, but I will congratulate them for the win,” he said.
Despite the setback, the Medeama coach urged calm within his squad as the title race enters its decisive stage.
“We just lost this game; we don’t have to panic, but we just have to go and watch the video and correct our mistakes,” Tanko added.
Although the defeat cut Medeama’s advantage at the top, the Tarkwa-based side remain leaders with 56 points. However, with only a two-point cushion and three matches left in the campaign, the battle for the league title remains wide open.
