Derrick Luckassen Joins Black Stars Camp as Djiku Fitness Concerns Persist

Black Stars defender Derrick Luckassen has reported to Ghana’s training camp in Wales ahead of the international friendly against Wales, with uncertainty continuing to surround the fitness of Alexander Djiku.

Luckassen arrived in Cardiff to join the squad as preparations intensify for Tuesday’s friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The centre-back becomes one of the latest players to report to camp, boosting head coach Carlos Queiroz’s defensive options as the Black Stars continue their final phase of preparations before naming the final 26-man squad.

His arrival comes at a crucial time, with concerns growing over the availability of experienced defender Alexander Djiku. The Ex-Fenerbahçe centre-back is reportedly still battling fitness issues, casting doubt over his readiness for both the Wales friendly and Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

The situation has increased the importance of Luckassen’s presence in camp, with the former PSV Eindhoven defender expected to compete for a place in the final squad should Djiku fail to recover in time.

Queiroz and his technical team are expected to closely monitor Djiku’s condition over the coming days before making a final decision on the composition of the squad.

The Black Stars have steadily assembled a near-full squad in Cardiff, with key figures including Jordan Ayew, Thomas Partey, Inaki Williams, Ernest Nuamah, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Antoine Semenyo all participating in training sessions.

Tuesday’s clash against Wales will serve as Ghana’s final friendly before the World Cup and provide the coaching staff with one last opportunity to assess players ahead of the tournament in North America.

Ghana will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before taking on England and Croatia in their remaining Group L fixtures.
