Kamaldeen Sulemana suffers MCL injury in Atalanta pre-season setback

Ghana winger Kamaldeen Sulemana is set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a knee injury during Atalanta’s pre-season victory over Schalke 04.

The 24-year-old suffered the setback during Atalanta’s 3-0 win at the VELTINS-Arena on Saturday. Sulemana came on at the beginning of the second half but was forced off just 16 minutes later after twisting his left knee.

Initial medical assessments have reportedly revealed a second-degree tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL), with the winger expected to spend around two to three months recovering.

The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Sulemana, who had been using pre-season to regain his fitness and prepare for the 2026/27 campaign after joining Atalanta.

His pace, direct running and ability to operate on either flank had made him an important attacking option for the Italian side, making the setback a concern ahead of the new season.

The injury could also affect his involvement with the Black Stars, with Sulemana potentially missing Ghana’s September international assignments if his recovery takes the expected 8–12 weeks.

For now, the focus will be on rehabilitation and ensuring he makes a full recovery before returning to competitive action. Sulemana will hope to overcome the setback and return to both Atalanta and Ghana duty in strong condition.
