Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has officially joined Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab, bringing his long spell in European football to an end.
The Saudi club confirmed the signing on Friday with a video announcement welcoming the experienced midfielder. While Al Shabab did not reveal the contract details, reports indicate that Partey has signed a one-year deal with the club.
The move marks the first time in Partey’s career that he will play outside Europe. The 33-year-old began his European journey in 2013 after leaving Ghanaian side Tema Youth for Atlético Madrid.
After loan spells at Mallorca and Almería, Partey returned to Atlético and established himself as an important part of Diego Simeone’s midfield. His performances eventually earned him a high-profile transfer to Arsenal in 2020, with the Premier League club reportedly paying around £45 million for his services.
Partey spent five seasons in North London, making more than 100 appearances for Arsenal and becoming a key figure in the club’s midfield before returning to Spain with Villarreal.
Now, the Ghana international begins a fresh chapter with Al Shabab, where his experience, physical presence and midfield leadership are expected to add significant quality to the Saudi side.
Partey has also been an important figure for the Black Stars since making his senior debut in 2016, representing Ghana at major international competitions. His move to Saudi Arabia now adds another chapter to the career of one of Ghana’s most accomplished midfielders of his generation.
