Coventry City forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has revealed that he played a part in the club’s decision to sign fellow Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi, after manager Frank Lampard sought his opinion on the midfielder during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Yirenkyi eventually joined Coventry City from Danish club FC Nordsjælland in a club-record transfer, becoming one of the club’s major additions ahead of their return to the Premier League.
According to Thomas-Asante, Lampard contacted him while both players were with Ghana at the World Cup and asked for his assessment of the young midfielder. The Coventry forward said the manager had already been impressed by Yirenkyi but wanted to hear from someone who knew the player closely.
“I don’t take too much credit, maybe a little. Frank Lampard called me during the World Cup, and he was very honest with his appreciation for Caleb and asked me for my opinions on him.”
Yirenkyi has since justified the interest shown in him, making an encouraging start to life at Coventry and contributing assists during both pre-season and competitive action.
