Debibi United Hold Asante Kotoko to 2-2 Draw

Asante Kotoko were forced to settle for a frustrating 2-2 draw against newly promoted Debibi United at the Golden City Park in Berekum on Sunday, leaving new head coach Eric Tinkler searching for answers after a sluggish start.

The Porcupine Warriors initially looked to be in control when Dogo Yakubu broke the deadlock in the 15th minute. Latching onto a precise through ball from Herbert Gyau, Yakubu took a composed touch before slotting the ball neatly into the bottom corner to send Kotoko into the interval with a narrow lead.

However, the game swung dramatically after the break as Debibi United came out firing. Richard Owusu brought the debutants level in spectacular fashion, unleashing a ferocious free-kick that left Kotoko goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim with no chance.

Sensing blood, the hosts kept the pressure on and completed a stunning turnaround in the 73rd minute. Owusu struck once more, capitalizing on defensive hesitancy to hand Debibi a famous 2-1 advantage.

Refusing to leave Berekum empty-handed, Kotoko relied on their pedigree to salvage a result. With time running out, Gyau reacted quickest inside a crowded penalty box during a goalmouth scramble, rifling home the equalizer to rescue a point for the visitors.

While the Porcupine Warriors were far from their fluid best, the spirited display from Debibi United underscored the grit and danger they bring to the top flight.

Tinkler’s men will look to regroup ahead of a home fixture against Heart of Lions at the Baba Yara Stadium next weekend, while Debibi take immense confidence into their upcoming away trip to face Swedru All Blacks.
