Ghana’s Black Satellites technical team, led by Maxwell Konadu has begun laying the groundwork for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, with the head coach revealing that the core of the squad is already in place.
The Black Satellites are guaranteed a place at next year’s tournament as hosts and will be looking to build a stronger side after their disappointing campaign at the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire.
Ghana failed to record a victory in the competition, suffering a 4-2 defeat to Nigeria before drawing 1-1 with Burkina Faso and ending their Group B campaign with a goalless draw against Togo.
Despite the results, the technical team believes the tournament provided important lessons that can guide preparations for next year’s continental showpiece.
The coach says only a few additions are needed to strengthen the current squad.
“So far, we have the core of the team in place. We only have to make a few additions.”
With preparations already underway in some other countries, the Ghana coach wants the Black Satellites to avoid falling behind.
“Before we start camping, we have to meet and agree on a date. I have seen that other countries have already started their preparations, so we will also have to hit the ground running.”
The coach also intends to engage the Ghana Football Association over the team’s preparation plans, particularly the need for quality friendly matches.
“I think we will have to speak with the FA and let them know what we need to do to be very competitive in the tournament. More friendly matches, both locally and internationally, are very, very important at this stage.”
The Black Satellites will therefore be hoping to use the months ahead to strengthen the squad, improve their tactical organisation and build a team capable of challenging for the U-20 AFCON title on home soil.
