Former Ghana Football Association Vice President George Afriyie believes the Black Stars have every reason to believe they can get a positive result against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L fixture, Afriyie has backed Otto Addo’s men to challenge one of Europe’s football powerhouses when the two sides meet in Boston.
Speaking on Adom FM, Afriyie argued that recent results at the World Cup have shown that traditional football giants are no longer untouchable.
“We all know the pedigree of Portugal in international football, but if Congo can draw with Portugal, then Ghana can draw with England or even beat them,” he said.
The former Black Stars Management Committee chairman also pointed to Morocco’s impressive draw against Brazil as further proof that underdogs can compete with the biggest nations on the world stage.
“We all know the pedigree of Brazil, and if Morocco can draw with Brazil, then it can happen in the Ghana-England game as well,” Afriyie added.
With both Ghana and England winning their opening matches, Monday’s encounter is expected to play a major role in deciding who takes control of Group L.
Afriyie insists the Black Stars should approach the match with confidence and belief rather than fear, stressing that England’s reputation alone should not intimidate Ghana’s young squad.
