Medeama SC could move a step closer to winning a second Ghana Premier League title when they welcome Heart of Lions to the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium on Sunday in a crucial penultimate fixture of the season.
The Mauve and Yellow currently sit at the top of the league standings, holding a two-point advantage over defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars FC with only two games left in the 2025/26 campaign.
A victory for Medeama, combined with a slip-up from Gold Stars in their away clash against Dreams FC, could hand the Tarkwa-based side the league title before the final round of matches.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko and his players head into the encounter full of confidence after bouncing back from their defeat to Berekum Chelsea with a narrow but important 1-0 win over Basake Holy Stars FC.
The result helped Medeama reclaim momentum in the title race and extended their lead at the summit to 59 points after 32 matches.
Their success this season has largely been built on balance at both ends of the pitch. Medeama currently boast the league’s best attacking record with 45 goals scored while also maintaining one of the strongest defensive records after conceding only 22 times.
Their impressive performances at home have also played a major role in their title challenge. In 16 league matches at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium, Medeama have recorded 11 wins, four draws and just one defeat.
The league leaders have additionally won each of their last three home matches, scoring at least two goals in every game while keeping consecutive clean sheets.
Despite Medeama’s strong form, Heart of Lions arrive in Tarkwa eager to frustrate the title hopefuls after rediscovering confidence with a commanding 3-0 victory over FC Samartex 1996.
That result ended a difficult run for coach Bashir Hayford’s side and lifted them to 13th position on the table with 42 points.
Although Heart of Lions have struggled away from home in recent weeks, failing to win any of their last five league matches on the road, they will draw encouragement from previous visits to Tarkwa.
The Kpando-based club are unbeaten in their last two away league meetings against Medeama, recording one victory and one draw while keeping clean sheets in both encounters.
