England manager Thomas Tuchel has showered praise on Ghana following the Black Stars impressive defensive performance in Tuesday’s goalless draw at the FIFA World Cup, describing it as one of the most physical displays he has witnessed from an international team.
The Group L encounter saw England dominate possession but struggle to break down a disciplined Ghana side that remained compact and organised throughout the 90 minutes.
Despite controlling nearly 80 percent of the ball, the Three Lions failed to find a way past Ghana’s resilient defence, with Tuchel acknowledging the challenge his players faced.
“Credit to them. I rarely saw a physical performance like that from a team,” the England boss said after the match.
Tuchel noted that Ghana’s tactical discipline made life difficult for his side, with the Black Stars defending in numbers and limiting England’s attacking opportunities.
“They defended with 10 players in a deep, deep block, so it made it difficult for us because they were very disciplined and very physical in every position,” he explained.
The former Chelsea manager also highlighted the threat posed by Ghana on the counterattack, revealing that England had to remain cautious despite enjoying the majority of possession.
“Everything was our responsibility to find rhythm. At the same time, you need to be careful not to concede counterattacks,” Tuchel added.
England finished the match with 79 percent possession, the highest recorded by a team that failed to score in a World Cup match in more than six decades, but the statistic ultimately counted for little against Ghana’s determined resistance.
The result leaves both Ghana and England on four points heading into the final round of Group L fixtures, with qualification for the knockout stages still up for grabs.
