Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has called for unity within Ghana’s squad as competition intensifies for the number one position ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Asare, who currently holds the first-choice role under head coach Carlos Queiroz, faces stiff competition from Lawrence Ati Zigi, Joseph Anang, Solomon Agbasi and Paul Reverson.
The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper came under scrutiny after an early mistake in Ghana’s recent friendly loss to Mexico, increasing debate over who should start at the Mundial.
Despite the pressure, Asare says the team’s success remains more important than individual status.
“I want to achieve great things for myself, but that does not mean I have achieved it as the number one for the national team. I have to work harder because we have more goalkeepers, but we need to maintain unity so that we can achieve our goal as a strong team,” he said.
Asare also spoke about adapting to the methods of the Black Stars’ new goalkeepers’ trainer as Carlos Queiroz continues preparations for the tournament.
Ghana are expected to announce their final 26-man World Cup squad on June 1 before facing Wales in a friendly on June 2.
