Benjamin Asare backs Queiroz’s goalkeeper decision ahead of World Cup

Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare says he will respect any decision made by head coach Carlos Queiroz regarding Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper has emerged as Ghana’s preferred goalkeeper under Queiroz, but competition for the position has intensified following his error in the recent friendly defeat to Mexico.

Lawrence Ati Zigi, Joseph Anang, Solomon Agbasi and Paul Reverson are all competing for places in Ghana’s final 26-man squad for the tournament in North America.

Speaking ahead of Ghana’s final pre-World Cup friendly against Wales, Asare stressed the importance of unity within the squad regardless of who earns the starting role.

“If the coach starts another goalkeeper, it doesn’t mean that because I’m the number one, I should be angry. We have to stay prayerful and united for collective success,” he said.

The 32-year-old also admitted the competition among the goalkeepers remains fierce but insisted teamwork remains more important than personal ambitions.

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England and Croatia in Group L.
