Yaw Ampofo Ankrah Backs André Ayew for Black Stars World Cup Return

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah believes André Ayew still deserves a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting the veteran forward’s experience and leadership qualities ahead of the tournament.

The Director-General of the National Sports Authority has joined growing calls for Ayew’s return to the Black Stars setup despite the former captain being absent from the national team since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

Ayew, who recently became a free agent following his departure from NAC Breda, remains one of Ghana’s most experienced players heading into the World Cup year.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Ampofo Ankrah insisted the 36-year-old could still make a major contribution at the global tournament.

“I will be extremely surprised if Dede Ayew does not secure selection at least into the provisional squad list for the World Cup,” he said.

“Beyond his recent solid strides to regain fitness, Dede’s immense experience would be a huge asset for Ghana at the biggest football gathering of all time,” he added.

Ayew has represented Ghana at three previous World Cups in 2010, 2014 and 2022, making 17 appearances and scoring once for the Black Stars at the tournament.

The former Marseille and Swansea City forward is also Ghana’s second-highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia for the tournament in North America.
