Ghanaian duo Caleb Yirenkyi and Brandon Thomas-Asante made their Premier League debuts on Friday night as newly promoted Coventry City suffered a 3-0 defeat to defending champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Yirenkyi, Coventry’s record signing following his £26 million move from Nordsjælland, was handed a starting role in Frank Lampard’s midfield as the 2026/27 campaign marked his first appearance in England’s top flight. Thomas-Asante also started, leading the Coventry attack after playing a key role in the club’s promotion last season with 13 goals and four assists.
Arsenal dominated from the opening whistle and took control through Kai Havertz’s 15th-minute opener before Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage seven minutes later. Martin Ødegaard added a third shortly after the restart to complete a comfortable victory for the hosts.
Yirenkyi endured a difficult introduction to Premier League football, receiving a yellow card for a foul on Myles Lewis-Skelly and later being cautioned again following another challenge. Thomas-Asante, meanwhile, had a penalty appeal rejected in the second half.
Despite the result, both Ghanaians have now taken an important first step in their Premier League journeys. Coventry will hope the experience serves as a learning curve as they look to adapt to life among England’s elite and establish themselves in the top flight.
