Only Few Kotoko Players Deserve the Badge – Charles Taylor

Former Asante Kotoko winger Charles Taylor has taken aim at the club’s current squad, questioning whether many of them merit a place in the team.

During a live appearance on Angel TV and Angel 102.9 FM, the outspoken ex-Porcupine Warriors star delivered a blunt assessment of the side’s quality, arguing that only a handful of players meet the standards historically associated with the Kumasi giants.

“Asante Kotoko is a big team without big players. Only 30% of the current players deserve to wear the team jersey,” he stated.

Taylor, who enjoyed a trophy-laden spell with the Reds, believes the club’s recent struggles are rooted in a shortage of strong personalities and consistent performers.

In his view, Kotoko’s stature in Ghanaian and African football demands footballers capable of handling pressure, showing leadership, and deciding games when it matters most.

His comments arrive amid mounting frustration from sections of the fanbase over inconsistent displays and the team’s inability to assert dominance in key fixtures. Concerns about recruitment decisions and squad depth have also been widely discussed among supporters.

Emphasising that representing Kotoko is a privilege rather than a right, Taylor insisted that only mentally tough and high-performing players should be entrusted with the famous red jersey.

The Porcupine Warriors will look to respond on the pitch when they travel to the Aliu Mahama Stadium for their Matchday 25 encounter against Karela United, a game many see as an opportunity to steady the campaign and silence critics.
