Augustine Arhinful Raises Concerns Over Benjamin Asare’s Command of the Box

Former Ghana international Augustine Arhinful has called for improvements in the game of Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare following Ghana’s recent friendly against Wales.

Arhinful believes the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper still has areas of his game that need refinement, particularly his communication and command of the penalty area.

Speaking on Sporty FM, the ex-Black Stars forward suggested Asare often struggles when dealing with crosses and questioned whether he could have done more to prevent Wales’ goal.

“Benjamin Asare has to be spoken to. His communication and how he comes out needs to improve,” Arhinful said.

“He’s always found wanting when there’s a cross into our box. The question is, could he have done something about the goal Wales scored, considering his positioning?”

Asare has emerged as one of Ghana’s leading goalkeeping options under head coach Carlos Queiroz and remains part of the squad preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, competition remains fierce in the goalkeeping department, with Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Anang also pushing for opportunities ahead of the tournament.

Despite the criticism, Asare continues to enjoy the confidence of the technical team and is expected to remain in contention for a prominent role as Ghana fine-tune preparations for the World Cup in North America.
