“You Can’t Have a National Team Coach Who Visits Only for Competitions” – Kofi Adams

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says Ghana’s next Black Stars head coach must maintain a stronger presence in the country if appointed from abroad, insisting that the role should extend beyond preparing the team for matches and tournaments.

The minister’s comments come as the Ghana Football Association searches for a successor to Carlos Queiroz, who parted ways with the association after Ghana’s difficult opening to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Speaking to Citi FM, Adams disclosed that the government had raised the issue during engagements with the GFA, stressing the need for the next appointment to involve more regular time in Ghana.

“In our engagement [with the GFA], we indicated that our coach should also be interested in spending time in Ghana,” he said.

He added that a national team coach should not only arrive when the Black Stars have competitive fixtures but should also spend time locally while travelling to Europe when necessary to scout players.

“You can’t have a national team coach who visits the country only when the team is coming to play a competition… then you are not a national team coach. The coach must spend more time here and maybe go to Europe to also scout there from time to time,” Adams added.

Ghana are expected to appoint a new head coach before their remaining Group C qualifying matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia. In the meantime, an interim technical team is expected to oversee the Black Stars for next month’s double-header against Somalia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko have reportedly been linked with possible roles in the temporary setup, although no official appointment has been confirmed in the information provided.

The Black Stars sit bottom of Group C without a point after losing their first two qualifying matches. Ghana are now seeking to revive their campaign and secure a return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
