Julian Nunoo earns WAFU Zone B U20 Championship appointment

Elite Ghanaian referee Julian Nunoo has been selected to officiate at the upcoming WAFU Zone B U20 Championship in Ivory Coast, becoming the only Ghanaian centre referee appointed for the regional tournament.

The competition is scheduled to run from July 26 to August 10, 2026, with West Africa’s top youth national teams battling for qualification to the 2027 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, which Ghana will host.

Announcing the appointment, the Ghana Football Association praised Nunoo’s achievement, stating:

“Elite referee Julian Nunoo has been appointed to officiate at the upcoming WAFU Zone B U20 Championship in Ivory Coast. Nunoo is the only Ghanaian center referee selected for the prestigious tournament.”

The GFA noted that the appointment is another recognition of the referee’s growing reputation on the continent after years of consistent performances.

“The experienced referee, who was named Ghana’s Best Referee in 2023, continues to earn recognition from football authorities for his excellent decision-making, fitness levels and command of matches.”

The Association also described the appointment as another endorsement of Ghana’s contribution to football officiating across Africa.

“Nunoo’s appointment represents another milestone for Ghanaian refereeing and highlights the country’s continued contribution to football officiating in Africa.”

The WAFU Zone B U20 Championship is expected to showcase some of West Africa’s brightest young talents, with places at the 2027 Africa U20 Cup of Nations at stake.

Nunoo will now be aiming to deliver another impressive performance on the international stage while continuing to enhance the reputation of Ghanaian referees across the continent.
