Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has challenged his players to deliver a disciplined and almost flawless performance when they face Colombia in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana take on the South Americans at Kansas City Stadium on Saturday, with a place in the last 16 at stake in what promises to be one of the biggest matches of the Black Stars’ campaign.
Addressing the media ahead of the encounter, Queiroz acknowledged the quality of Colombia but insisted Ghana also possesses the talent and determination to progress.
“It is an important game for both teams. It will be great to see two fantastic teams with different styles committed to winning the game and entertaining the fans,” he said.
The Portuguese tactician, who previously managed Colombia, revealed that his knowledge of the South Americans will count for little unless his side focuses on the current version of their opponents.
“I know Colombia very well, but it is our obligation to study today’s Colombia, not yesterday’s Colombia. We know their qualities, but we also have players with a lot of quality and determination.”
Queiroz stressed that knockout football leaves no room for lapses in concentration, warning that every detail could determine the outcome of the contest.
“There are no perfect teams. Colombia are not perfect, and we are not perfect. But tomorrow there is no room for mistakes. We have to do everything right for 90 minutes, or 120 minutes if necessary.”
Despite the magnitude of the occasion, the former Portugal and Real Madrid coach urged his players to embrace the challenge rather than fear it.
“The pressure of a game like this is not a problem, it is a privilege. It is a privilege to be here playing against great players on the biggest stage in football.”
He concluded by calling on his squad to give everything for the nation as they chase a place in the Round of 16.
“We have to enjoy the game and do everything that is in our hearts and souls so the Black Stars shine tomorrow and achieve the result our fans expect.”
